1080 is fortunate to have had the opportunity to design the YWCA’s KIKASKIHTÂNAW Centre in partnership with @numbertenarch . Guided by principles of trauma-informed design, this transformational facility functions as a ‘hub’ for a variety of services that support women and families, including residences, a crisis shelter, YWCA Outreach services, child care, a youth hub and multi-purpose space, as well as a community café and consignment store.

The YWCA site was developed to create a culturally responsive moment of quiet for the community, including a ceremonial space with sweat lodge as well as a children’s play area on the site. 1080 had the opportunity to design the ceremonial space at the centre of the site in collaboration with All Nations Hope Network. This central element is a contemporary imagining of a Gathering Space for community celebration, embedded in the earth and serving as the focal point of the site.

1080 had the privilege of supporting the YWCA’s Women of Distinction event this past week through our sponsorship of the Corporate Innovation award. It was a joy to celebrate the accomplishments of women in our community, and to see the centre brimming with the supportive energy that the YWCA brings to every interaction. Congratulations to all! #1080architecture #reginaarchitect #saskarchitect #YQR #yqrbusiness #archdaily #architecturelovers #designinspiration #architecture #interiorstyle #interiors

As architects, we shape the spaces where communities live, learn work and play, but our role goes beyond this and is a reflection of the values and priorities of the communities themselves.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect on the privilege we have to work and live on treaty territory and our responsibility to ensure that our work reflects the land, its people and its traditions.

We cannot undo the past, but we can build spaces that promote inclusion, education, and understanding for future generations. Designing with truth and reconciliation in mind means creating spaces that tell the full story—acknowledging Indigenous lands and traditions, while also empowering communities through collaboration and respect.
