Situated at the heart of Jubilee park in Weyburn, SK, this new 10,635 m2 Elementary School is a unique 21st Century Learning Environment physically connected to a City-owned recreation and cultural facility creating a community hub for learning, gathering, and play.

Serving as a replacement for three aging schools in Weyburn and the surrounding rural area, the design team was tasked with capturing the individual identities and culture of each student body and integrating elements of each into the new school. Working closely with the City of Weyburn, the School Division and a diverse group of community stakeholders, the design team set out to accommodate a wide range of needs under one roof. A series of integrated design process (IDP) stakeholder engagement sessions informed the design team to the nuances of each former school, as well as the opportunities and challenges presented by the new building and its connectivity to the Weyburn Recreation and Cultural Centre.

The Weyburn Elementary School accommodates 650 pre-k to grade 6 students, as well as a 51 spot child care in a new state of the art facility based on the most current 21st Century Learning Philosophies. Designed around a large light filled student commons, small learning communities branch off around the perimeter, creating neighbourhoods within the building and providing multiple types of learning environments to accommodate various learning styles. The building features a regulation size gymnasium with a full stage, a custom performing arts studio, an innovative media centre, space for project-based learning in each neighbourhood, and a highly specialized bus loop that will accommodate 30 buses daily.
